I live in a small town – Burhar in Madhya Pradesh. Quick Facts about the place:
Nearest Railway Junction: 200kms far on either direction. (Bilaspur Junction CG & Katni Junction MP)
Nearest Airport: 400kms Raipur (CG) & Jabalpur 133kms.
The advertisement of Viroprotect Hand Sanitizer from Asian Paints was released on 03.08.2020. Being from the engineering background and having a work experience in process industry, it was not hard for me to understand and appreciate the agility of Asian Paints to produce Hand Sanitizers, but what caught my attention was seeing the same thing in a local kirana shop (urorganized sector) on 05.08.2020 when I went out for shopping.
Being an operations enthusiast and a student of Logistics & Supply Chain Management, I immediately started thinking about the route through which it might have reached this small town which is not visible on the map of India. What was even more interesting was, how did it reach here during the pandemic, yes, Sanitizer is something that the world is looking towards right now, but with all the state borders closed, railways working on half capacity, buses & trucks services not working, how did Asian Paints manage to make a much needed commodity available to each and every person.
This is the beauty of Supply Chain; during this pandemic, one thing that was explicitly heard by everyone was the disruption of Supply Chain, within 3 months of the country being locked down, a commodity like Sanitizers was available in local kiarana shop.
After carrying out some research I understood, the Sanitizer was produced in Nagpur and transported by Road to all the central parts of the country.
It is interesting how products arrive at kirana shops despite the lock downs. I would say the same with face masks too. As soon as the pandemic struck, majority of the companies shifted their focus on making masks as they knew the demand will be huge. They made masks readily available through the local supplier connections.
