Some shipping terms


Shipping goods is more complicated then transporting an object from one place to another. There are a number of procedures and regulations to be taken care of.

The shipping terminology has to be tracked all the time . And knowing the important terms is very much essential to avoid confusion.

1) Incoterms- International Commercial Terms

The terms are primarily used to to clearly communicate the costs, tasks and risks associated with the transportation and delivery of goods.

When purchasing or selling goods the goods has to be transported from the origin to their destination. Negotiation is done at the point of purchase about completing the task. Both the parties have to you understand and agree on the particulars.


2) COD- Change of destination

This is a request which asks a container ship to discharge the container and to transport the goods to another destination which was originally booked.

This happens when we realize that it the shipping destination has to be changed.


3) CYCY- Container Yard to Container Yard

A container yard is a facility where containers stored before they are getting loaded onto the ship or after discharge from the ship. It explains the responsibility of the carrier begins and ends at the container yard.


4) DM- Demurrage

Demurrage is the fee that container line charges when the important time  is not the same as promised. After discharging the containers there is a free period for storing them in the port. If they are not able to to move it before the free period ends they will be charged.


5) Rollover- the container was never loaded onto the ship

There is a chance for the containers to get rolled. This is when the container didn't make the vessel and the container must have not been loaded in The vessel because of customs problems, overbooking aur vessel emissions.

6) DT- Detention

Detention is a fee are we have to pay if we have picked up the containers but failed to 

return them to the shipping line in time. We have to pay for the each extra day taken to return the container.


7) Port Storage

When the container is discharged from a ship they move It to the container yard. The port provides free period of storage. During this period there is time to take the customs clearance and transport the goods to a warehouse or the final destination. If the transport of goods don't  happen in time the port will charge for port storage
