How AI and ML influencing Logistics sector ?

Welcome back Dear Readers, This is Dharunanand R pursuing MBA in Analytics and Operations from Amrita School of Business. In this week's blog on Supply Chain lets explore  " How AI and ML influencing Logistics sector ?"

In this article let's see how the invasion of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning change the logistics sectors and how the impact is created in the Industry and also we have a look at how the technology change the life of Truck Drivers, who are very important and considered to be backbone of this sector

We all know every part of India is not connected to ports and railways, still many cities and villages are accessible only by road transport which is also considered to be inefficient in many ways by the experts, but the scope for autonomous delivery in India is not possible at this moment and it is very expensive. So the companies are trying their best to transport the goods through roadways in more efficient way with use of technology.

Truck drivers and their changing ecosystem in logistics sector

We already discussed that drivers are very important for this sector, the safety and job insecurity are major problems associated with this sector and also the Interstate travel and Highway thefts are making the conditions even worse. The trucks used by the companies are also very old and creating inefficiency in the delivery process. For all this the companies are Integrating their vehicles with technology which is the Fleet Management System (FMS) which incorporates sensors and modules within and transmit the signals to the head office where the software is installed, with this the behavior of drivers are monitored in real time and performance can be improved.

The new addition to this system is the arrival of AI and ML. These two technologies play an important role in  every industry and also recognised as the future of the world. Here we are using AI to predict Geo Fences that are setup, Real time Fuel Monitoring, Prediction of traffic so that they can change the route, Guard against Theft etc. ML is used to know the real time situation of the situation and companies can take corrective actions if required. The drivers are given a app which takes control of everything from route optimization to Sleep Alert for drivers based on the time they have drove the vehicle which is rarely found in India.Due to this implementation many accidents have been prevented which might have occurred due to lack of sleep

Firms have started using this technology to enhance the safety of drivers and goods which paves way for the well developed and technology equipped industry.

  1. While AI and ML does enhance the saftey of drivers and goods paving the way for well developed and technology equipped industry, do u think automation will distrupt the drivers with the rise of self driving cars and trucks are in the rise while delivery robots are starting to be used?
