How medicines are handled in Freights

Hello everyone, This is Dharunanand R, studying MBA second year from Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore. I would like to share the blog on " How medicines are handled in Freight ?" 

Freight forwarding in Pharmaceutical Industry is considered to be similar to that of the ordinary freight in India, as it involves the same and budgets are similar. The stakeholders are very consistently maintaining a good relationship with them to ensure smooth supply.

As per the latest survey, the costs that are spent on packaging and transportation has been increased from 3.5 to 4.5% for a pharma company, since this industry involves the linkage of live of people any non uniformity may cause a damage to millions of people who are dependent for this medicines.

The company should follow good manufacturing practices to ensure quality and integrity for the distribution both internationally and nationally.

Some guidelines to be followed during transportation:

• The product identity should not be lost
• The product when mixed with other products should not reach the contamination stage and separate transport should be used
• Precautions should be taken against spillage, damage and theft
• Temperature and Humidity should be maintained

The drugs should be transferred at a specified limit and if there is a excess of transportation may cause a severe damage.

The deviations in storage conditions should be properly explained to the authorities and wait for the confirmation to do the same 

The transportation should not have a negative impact on the quality of drugs

Highly active and radioactive materials should be transported adhering to the country regulations to prevent the risks of fire and explosion. In addition to this International agreements and legalisations should be followed.

The pharmaceutical industry is expecting to grow in India in the upcoming years, but inefficiency of logistics of life science products may be considered as an impediment for the growth. We should develop the right skill set for winning the confidence of the manufacturer  confidence and also employ advance technologies to improve the efficiency of  Pharma-Supply chain
