Now is the time for operations in the supply chain to
establish a basic 5 G competency. There are some areas where it can offer
several significant advantages and be a huge upgrade to existing functionality
of warehouses
5 G would also allow new capabilities for video
analytics This could include full
real-time video capture of the items being shipped, the loading of the truck,
the number of boxes, and what the inventory is as it is being shipped. The
video feed could instantly be processed into real-time 3D asset models via
cloud-based applications that allow warehouses to determine the optimal
positioning, direction and timing of movements.
In warehouses, 5 G networking would also boost the
efficiency of robots. Although many mobile robots now follow inflexible
warehouse paths, the highly accurate positioning allowed by 5 G would allow
them to operate and know where they are more easily.
5 G should be viewed by warehouse managers as less of a play
on technology and more of an infrastructure that could have a broad impact
across many parts of the supply chain. By continuing to pilot new technologies,
especially those that leverage IoT to streamline workflows and enhance
visibility in the supply chain, they can prepare for 5 G rollouts.
This is the perfect time for businesses to really evaluate
the value of 5 G not only as a technological enabler but also for its potential
in all parts of the supply chain.
