Mobile three - way sortation for e- commerce & warehouses

Hii all, I am Priyadarsini currently pursuing 2nd year MBA at Amrita School of business. Here's my new blog post!!

Automated Sortation Systems

Picking seems to get all of the attention when it comes to sortation, and for good reason, automated sortation will go a long way in adapting the order fulfilment system for the new realities facing the operation

High-volume e-commerce operations in large batches (100-200 orders per batch) can select individual or complete cases of units for several different orders and allow a unit sorter to divert and consolidate them into distinct orders. The device will warn an operator to pack the order and send it to ship until the last item arrives for an order.

Similarly, orders can be picked discreetly into totes in a medium volume operation and a sorter can be used to consolidate several totes of an order from various sections of the picking area to the same package station so that they can be packed into the same carton, or to route split case orders to particular types of packing tasks depending on the type of shipping container needed, i.e. Polybags, cartons, packaging for gifts, etc.

This can be made even more easier using a mobile three-way sortation system

The Modsort Trident, a three-way sortation system, has been implemented by Regal Beloit. It has a four-zone feed that gaps a product, reads the package, and sends it down a belt, then diverts it to a 30-deg left, right or straight to one of three sorting sites, spur-curve.

Modsort technologies include the Modsort Station (individual transfer), the Flat Sorter Systems (with maximum mobile and expandable solution), and the Modsort Derivatives (with extended sorting capacity). As a secondary sortation station in a fulfilment centre, the Modsort Trident is appropriate and works for parcel post, e-commerce and warehouse distribution applications.

On average, the system can handle up to 50cartons per minute, with a 50 lb weight limit. For polybags, bins, flats, and other kinds of totes, long triple-belt diverts.24V DC power is used by Modsort Trident technology which requires only a basic power drop which Ethernet link to the warehouse management solution of the customer. It is built to be mobile (heavy-duty casters come with the unit) and can be redeployed to another location if necessary.
