Alstom's WAG 12B, India's first freight locos approved for 120 kmph speed

 The ministry of railways and RDSO officially approved the high speed electric locomotives to run as freight trains at a maximum speed of 120kmph.



Earlier the Indian railway has inducted the WAG 12B e-locos which were the fastest. They have already crossed 1 million kilometers and is of great importance to the countries freight logistics landscape.

They allow the faster and safer movement of heavier freight trains capable of hauling 6000 tons. They are are expected to increase the speed of freight trains by at least 20 to 25 kilometers.

According to Alain Spohr the managing director of Alstom India and south Asia, the approval from RDSO is the matter of of pride for Alstom. India is pushing more towards self Reliance by leveraging local engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

Alstom is also trying to reduce the carbon  footprint and to adopt cleaners technologies to achieve the largest green railway network.

It also leads to to considerable savings in energy since it is equipped with insulated gate bipolar transistors based propulsion technology. This helps acceleration process more efficient and reduced the the heat generation and traction noise.
