Dear Readers, This is Muhammad Jassim pursuing second year MBA from Amrita School of Business Coimbatore. Welcome back to my blog on Supply Chain Management. In this week's blog is all about Ice Creams that too in specific about the Material Management strategies followed by Amul Ice Cream's.
Materials Management in Amul Ice Cream:
To hold a firm position in a market that they serve, the company should be the Best in serving customers with their multiple products and product lines that their consumers like the most. In order to achieve this strategy any company should follow best practices, as in the case of Amul Ice Creams.
The Amul Ice Creams Best Practices when comes to Material Management are as follows,
1. An efficient cold chain network:
The Amul Ice Creams cold chain network is considered to be the India's largest cold chain network holding 18000 cold chain units across India. They also have in build chilling units in trucks to keep the ice creams fresh during logistics operations.
2. An efficient procurement practice :
Amul Ice Creams procurement process takes place through bringing in suppliers and buyers closer through Diary Co operations units where the suppliers supply the main ingredient for ice creams that is milk. From where milk is send to various cold and dry storage ware houses which in turn package and sold as an end product to their consumers as Amul Ice Cream through various retailers and Ice Cream Parlors across the country.
3. Amul's Precise Supply chain :
To follow a precise supply chain practices is what that other Ice cream companies lag behind but Amul does not have compromise in it. As Amul has its own diary farm its is not necessary for Amul to outsource ingredients that are needed to prepare Ice Cream. Supply chain provides scope for enhanced forecasting and effective milk production capabilities and IT enable inventory tracking and management system.
Hope you find Amul's Material Management strategy interesting and Insightful, will meet next week with a yet another interesting topic in Supply Chain.
