RFID data into actionable assets

Greetings I’m Suriya Kumar, Pursuing MBA at Amrita School of Business. This blog is about my understandings on how the data collected with RFID tags placed with product can be used in a supply chain process.

In a connected and smart world, accuracy and real time visibility has become essential for procurement, distribution logistics, stores etc. This can be achieved using 3 major steps

1. Product

Using a RFID chip with stored information about the product and enabling to gather data, it can give necessary information about the product’s origin, its package, shipping details and customer information it’s a customized product. This data enables the stores, distributors and the manufactures to track the product and gather data from it till it reaches the customer.

2. Data

Now with the available data like the number of days it takes to reach from one place to another or the period its being stored as unfinished goods all can be collected and integrated to make better ERP and MRP for its manufacturing and distribution cycles through logistics services.

3. Value

With the exact information, forecasts are made more accurately leading to better planning. As a result the manufacturers and the vendors have control over stock accuracy, order fulfilment, stockouts, backorders etc. Hence improved data for decision making with accuracy with Business Intelligent tools and dashboards connected to the cloud the process becomes easier.

Thus the combination of RFID and IoT can make the supply chain processes more value added.
