Sustainability in Logistics

Hi everyone. I'm Arun R from Amrita School of Business and this is my 7th  blog. This blog is about the sustainability in logistics, and their advantages.

The logistics providers and suppliers are now thinking of adopting sustainability to build a better tomorrow. Sustainability in logistics is very important, for most of the supply chain organization, and we can see  a large growth in this model as more players are implementing this in the last couple of years .

Sustainability is considered as an initiative of government to reduce the pollution and other related things. But now it is evident that the consumer started to move more towards sustainability, with customers willing to pay and wait longer for sustainable products. This shows that there is a global trend towards not only customers but the whole world changing towards sustainability and are worrying about the changing environmental conditions.

Reducing the carbon footprint is now considered as a marketing plan for different organization showing that they care for the environment. This is considered as a USP for many companies. This also makes customers willing to pay more and wait longer than expected.

To implement sustainability transparent and integrity are considered as the fundamental building blocks. The organization needs to reveal what are all the processes that’s happening in their network. There are many advantages and improvements while implementing sustainability in logistics. The first and foremost one is the reduction in emissions. Due to transportation the carbon emissions become higher, many vehicles running in fossil fuels will increase this emission. By reducing the miles travelled carbon footprint of the company is reduced and also reduces the transportation cost.

This also helps to reduce the amount of waste product in vehicles since the number of miles travelling is less. This reduces the wear and tear of vehicle parts.  This also reduces the amount of energy consumed and also helps to increase and create awareness among public . The implementation of sustainability not only reduces the carbon footprint but also is a cost effective one.

Firms like UPS, Walmart, Uber etc. have already implemented sustainability in their transportation system.
